LED luminaires have been present on the market for more than half a century, but they have become popular only recently. The new technology allows to create high-power LEDs, which can successfully replace the traditional light sources. As any solution, the LED lighting has advantages and disadvantages. One of the biggest advantages is that their long lifetime is 25 times longer than that of the traditional light sources.
LED LIGHTING – ADVANTAGES
The LED lighting has many advantages over traditional lighting. These include:
- Efficiency – ordinary light sources achieve an energy efficiency of 10%, while that of LED luminaires is 90 percent.
- Useful life – LED lighting modules last on average 25 times longer than traditional lamps. The average working time of a LED is about 50,000 hours!
- Variety of light colour – LED technology allows to achieve any temperature colour of visible light.
- Heat emission – thanks to their high efficiency LEDs generate little heat. Traditional, low-efficiency lamps dissipate the heat outside and hence cannot be used for example in cold stores.
- Ecology – LED technology does not require the use of mercury and other harmful substances, which has a positive impact on environmental protection.

LED LIGHTING – DISADVANTAGES
Like any technology, LED lighting also has its drawbacks and requires some compromises. The most important of these are:
- Cost – LED modules and LED luminaires are more expensive than other light sources.
On the other hand, thanks to the extended service life and high energy efficiency, the investment pays for itself after just a few years.
- Cool spectrum and blue noise – blue light is reflected by the earth’s atmosphere more strongly than other white light sources, thus changing the perception of colours or materials.
- Temperature influence – this relates mainly to industrial applications and operation under extreme conditions. LEDs are sensitive to high temperatures, which can lead to a weakening of the light output.
